    At Oxford Quantum Circuits (OQC) we are building quantum computers to enable life-changing discoveries : from new drug modelisation to longer-lasting battery technology and portfolio optimisation. We are developing a cloud based quantum computer service – Quantum Computing as a Service (QCaaS) – to help our customers improve their operations and trailblaze new commercial and scientific approaches.

    Our team is composed of 20 people with various backgrounds in quantum physics, nanotechnologies, hardware, and software. We are all bound by the desire to put OQC at the forefront of the quantum revolution and build a technology with practical applications in mind.

    ROLE OVERVIEW

    As OQC’s Laboratory Engineer, you will work within the Quantum Hardware Team and assist the Laboratory Manager with the day-to-day running of OQCs purpose-built quantum laboratory. You will assist with the scheduling of our measurement systems and will be involved in designing efficiency improvements in the laboratory, as well as the role allowing scope for involvement in the state-of-the-art measurements OQC are carrying out. You will ensure that the laboratory is organised, that all equipment is maintained, and that the cryogenic platforms of OQC’s quantum computers are operational. You will assist implementation of procedures, and health and safety protocols in the laboratory. You will be a member of the out of hours response team, at times agreed with your manager.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Operation and scheduling of laboratory equipment
    • Ensure maintenance of equipment and services is carried out
    • Overseeing the day-to-day Health and Safety of the laboratory with assistance from the Laboratory Manager
    • Creation and maintenance of procedure and Health and Safety documentation
    • Help respond to situations in the laboratory as part of out of hours calls
    • Ensure the laboratory is well-stocked and well-resourced
    • Scope to take part in electrical measurements 

    QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
    Required

    • 3+ years of experience in a laboratory environment
    • Experience with cryogens and/or cryogenic systems
    • Excellent knowledge of safe working practices in a laboratory
    • Highly adaptable, good communication skills, and interpersonal skills
    • Excellent organisational skills
    • Ability to problem-solve dynamically

    Desirable

    • Experience with vacuum systems
    • Experience with implementation of new Health and Safety protocols
    • Experience with basic electrical measurements
    • Operation of water systems and manifolds
    • Operation and handling of high-pressure systems (cylinders and manifolds)
    • Eagerness to work within the technology sector

    LOCATION & TRAVEL

    This role is based in the UK. OQC’s office is located in Shinfield, Reading. There will be a requirement for occasional travel throughout the UK and elsewhere abroad for conferences, meetings and engineering visits.
