The Indian Institute of Science to Launch First-of-its-Kind MTech in Quantum Technology in August 2021

(TimesOfIndia) The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, is set to launch the first-of-its-kind MTech in Quantum Technology.
The four-semester programme with 16 credits in each semester, IISc’s MTech in Quantum Technology will commence in August 2021. The official statement released by the institute regarding the programme reads, “The program will train students in quantum technology, for both advanced research and advanced industry. The elective part of the program will equip students to acquire training in allied technology areas as well. The Entrepreneurship seminar will encourage students to initiate start-ups in the field and help build a sustainable ecosystem.”

The demand for quantum technology, and experts in this field is on a rapid rise both in India and on the international scene. It is expected to create about 50,000 jobs in the short term and over 2,000,000 in the longer term.

The application process closed March 31. The applicants were required to have a BE, BTech or equivalent degree in any engineering discipline, or four-year BS, MSc or equivalent degree in any science discipline, along with a valid score of the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and a strong mathematical background.

IISc launched its Quantum Technology Initiative (IQTI) in September 2020. It would leverage the Institute’s research expertise in the area of quantum technologies, and at the same time, form a visionary research and development platform through national and international collaborations. This initiative is envisaged not to be just purely academic science; it would actively engage with industry and strategic partners to create technology with economic benefits and social impact.
